Children in the House

I love that there is a firetruck in my powder room.
I love that there are purple princess dress up shoes in the master bathroom.
I love that there is a red car and a blue car on the floor of the master bedroom.
I love that there are Legos on the dining room table.
I love that there is a stuffy bald eagle on my kitchen counter.
I love that there is an orange bottle of bubbles in my daughters's bathroom.
I love that two medals hang from the doorknob going out the garage.
I love that there is an impossibly large container of animal crackers on top of the refrigerator.
I love that there is a playpen in my room.
I love that there is a sleeping bag and tent in my room.
I love that my children's beds have never been slept in.
I love that my bed has stuffed animals and children's blankets in it.
I love that Little House in the Big Woods is on my night table.
I love that there is a coloring book on the kitchen table.

There are beloved children living in my house.

Before I had kids, I didn't know there was a such a thing non-neuro-typical. I had no idea it would be this hard. I had no idea that being a mom was so heartbreaking so consistently. A Little Christmas Magic

About a week ago, I told all of my Facebook friends how much of a pain in the butt the Elf on the Shelf is. And it is. Every night there is the pressure to move her to a new spot and to get creative. I'm not creative. I have to use Pinterest for my ideas. And I don't enjoy messes. Well, I got a lesson this morning in why Elf on the Shelf is worth it. Yesterday, we took Turtle to see Santa Claus at the North Pole. She nervously stood next to Santa Claus - not close enough to touch him, but near him. He asked her what she wanted for Christmas, and she stammered out that she wanted to tell her Elf what she wanted: Santa: What is your Elf's name? Turtle: Dolphin Santa: Okay, I'll talk to Dolphin when I see her tonight. But you know the elves are ornery this year. They are going to string toilet paper on Christmas trees and use flour and sugar to make snow angels on your kitchen table. Last year, some of them even made zip lines. Turtle was smiling. Why a toddler puking on the couch makes for a great birthday

Today is my birthday. I'm 44. I have a very sick Segunda on my hands. The child can't stop coughing and she throws up and she chokes on her own snot ... you get the idea. My husband is starting to get sick too. Prima's birthday was Wednesday, but we didn't celebrate it until yesterday. Husband travels to Houston very early tomorrow morning. I took Prima to the birthday party of a classmate today. It wasn't much of a birthday. And as I wracked up the sympathy from the kind people who called to wish me a happy birthday, I realized that this is the best birthday ever. You see, I have a husband whom I have been married to for over 15 years. I have a lovely home. I have 2 children. What more does one need to have a great birthday?
