She Who Waits

The woman's eyes are overbright
The mother's smile is slightly wobbly
(if you pay close enough attention)
The woman refreshes email every 5 minutes
The mother watches TAs pour in for other families
The woman knows there is a holiday in China in 2 days
The mother might have to go the weekend without TA
The mother's first born has a cold
The thermometer has gone missing
She stayed home from school
Almost out of Sudafed
Had to go to work
Her daddy is taking care of her
Can't say yes to any future plans
Doesn't know when the trip is
Still so much to do
Baby's room to organize
Shopping to be done
Doctor's appointments to be made
Baby proofing to do
Packing to be done
Travel arrangements to make ... if only
Must monitor first child for any signs of a meltdown
They happen in seconds
Anything can set her off
Can we deviate from any routine?
Right now?
Too tenuous for everyone

The baby's eyes are cheerful
as she watches her caregiver
She knows she is loved
She might know she has a mama
out there somewhere
But for now, her mama is feeding her
Her mama holds her
Her mama plays with her
She doesn't know she waits.

Prima: Mom, you have told me this before and I didn't really listen. But I learned that when I stop being mean to Segunda and do nice things for her I feel really good. Me: What makes you say that? I don't have a title except a weakness maybe

By now, you know that I took Prima on a four day trip to San Diego and filled up our love buckets to the brim. It was a bit of a respite from our everyday worries. Now, we are back and reality is still there. Segunda is sick. She is coughing incessantly to the point of vomiting and she has a low grade fever. And I just want somebody else to come and take care of it for me. Husband is away on business. I have to get to work, and the second she gets sick, panic sets in about my job. Will I lose it if I have to stay home with her because I just took 3 days off of work? She's been sick for 6 days. When do we see a doctor? Why can't she stay healthy for longer than a few days? I've been back for a little over 24 hours and I'm already a panicked, tearful, frustrated mess. I don't know what to do for her. I don't know how to make her well. Raising a Girl

When I checked the box marked girl on the adoption application, I was doing it with a certain amount of "known" expectations. Note: husband was on board with checking that box too. I had visions in my mind of helping toddler fingers change the clothes of her baby dolls and advancing into barbies as she got older. I imagined her cuddling and "mothering" her babies. I imagined lots of frilly dress-up outfits and too big dress up shoes clopping around the house. I imagined peopling dollhouses and listening to her play house with her dolls. I imagined pretend makeup and stories about princesses. I knew intellectually that girls play with everything. When Turtle turned 2, she got a kitchen for Christmas. Occasionally she "bakes" some cookies and hands them or she plays restaurant. Often the only items on the menu are things like spider pie and snake soup.
